The development of the city itself began in the early 1920s under Arthur Letts, Sr. and was eventually completed by Letts’ son-in-law Harold Janss. It is believed that the name Holmby Hills was derived from Letts’ birthplace of Holdenby, England. It is interesting to note that the home which belonged to Arthur Letts, Jr. and also one of the first mega mansions built in the area in the 1920s is the present day Playboy Mansion – home of Hugh Hefner. It was Letts Sr.’s vision at the time to create a neighborhood of magnificent homes and as such the area has become a magnet of exclusivity to the rich, famous, and elite.
